About the project

SSH CENTRE (Social Sciences and Humanities for Climate, Energy aNd Transport Research Excellence) is a €3 million Horizon Europe project built on a clear premise: the European climate transition cannot be solved by technology alone. Social Sciences and Humanities are an essential part of the solution.

Over three years, a consortium of 13 organisations from across Europe — universities, research centres, stakeholder networks and communication and innovation companies — worked to strengthen SSH-STEM collaboration, develop knowledge brokerage strategies between researchers and policymakers, and drive citizen participation in the European Green Deal missions. The project operated around five strategic objectives: social innovation, interdisciplinary collaboration, transdisciplinary policy advice, inclusive participation and building SSH communities across Europe.

The results are tangible: three open-access policy books published by Springer, a Research and Innovation Agenda for Horizon Europe, public policy recommendations presented to European institutions, and an open knowledge platform accessible to the entire European research community.

Three key project milestones

1. SSH CENTRE book collection published by Springer Three volumes of interdisciplinary policy recommendations on climate, energy and mobility, with contributions from researchers across Europe, available in open access. 🔗 Climate · Energy · Mobility

2. Research and Innovation Agenda (RIA) for Horizon Europe A strategic document defining how to integrate Social Sciences and Humanities into future Horizon Europe Cluster 5 calls, with direct impact on European R&I policy. 🔗 Research and Innovation Agenda

3. Knowledge Brokerage Programme in 6 European cities Training of 30 SSH researchers as knowledge brokers in Arnhem, Grenoble, Porto, Rijeka, Valencia and Čačak, working directly with municipal teams on energy transition challenges. 🔗 Knowledge Brokerage Programme
